Grandview Farm Garden
Stowe, VT
(in progress)
The Project
Located across from the Grandview Barn with commanding views of Stowe Hollow.
Restoration of the historic Grandview farmhouse includes a new multi-level garage and accessory dwelling space in a modern barn addition. The original farmhouse was located closer to Stowe Hollow Road before being moved back and expanded over the years. The current owners had undertaken restoring the farmhouse before embarking on this more comprehensive renovation project intended to create additional living space for their adult children. Remnants of the old stone foundation are still visible near the road and will be incorporated into the landscape.
Rolling fields below the house include a mature apple orchard and blackberry thicket as well as the remnants of a chicken coop and storage shed.
The proposed landscape design is a modern reinterpretation of the historic farm, with a series of outdoor spaces set throughout the landscape that nod to the past and are designed to manage grade and circulation around the home. Strategic regrading and retaining walls will help expand the useable area on this sloping site while managing stormwater. Located downslope from the road, regrading the front yard will direct stormwater away from the home while vegetation and new stone walls provide modest screening from the road.
The Landscape
THe Design
The driveway was designed to accommodate both owners and guests with an upper drive and guest parking highlighted by cobblestone paving and farm gate while the lower driveway curves downhill to the garage bays on the lower level of the barn.
Outside of the kitchen is a small breakfast patio located in a sunny perennial garden with views towards the Grandview Barn, while slightly further downhill larger entertaining spaces include an event lawn and a timber pavilion with outdoor dining and fireplace on the site of the former chicken coop.
The prominent location and history of the site and farmhouse requires the designed landscape to play a supporting role- framing views, providing useable outdoor space, and utilizing functional details to evoke the working past of the farm.
The resulting restoration of the property ensures the landscape will continue to be functional and ecologically sensitive.
